LHM Innovations partnered with The University of Melbourne introduces a novel blood sampling device

Offered now for licensing, Bloody Easy, is a passive, low-volume blood collection system engineered to optimize phlebotomy outcomes, especially in the most challenging clinical contexts.

Why

Despite significant advancements in diagnostic methodologies, the fundamental approach to venous blood collection has remained largely unchanged since its widespread adoption in the mid-20th century. This stagnation poses considerable challenges, particularly in scenarios involving difficult venous access (DVA).

The Bloody-Easy device represents a meaningful and timely innovation in the field of phlebotomy, specifically addressing the persistent limitations of standard vacuum-based techniques in challenging clinical scenarios. It has demonstrated that the passive mechanism of BE intrinsically reduces the risks associated with haemolysis, reducing its incidence by an order of magnitude in a controlled study. Vein collapse, particularly in elderly patients, was reduced, as evidenced by the reduction in difficulty in obtaining blood draws.

Key Issues

1 | Average blood draw volume is 24-27ml of which > 90% is discarded.

2 | Patients made anaemic (iatrogenic anaemia) through repeated collects do not regain baseline / premorbid wellness even if they are transfused.

3 | A cancer as well as an ICU patient may undergo up to 50 blood collects over a weeks' stay.

4 | Current golden standard collection method is cumbersome, requires skill, and can't be done single-handedly.

5 | Vacuum-driven collection carries risk of sample spoilage due to blood haemolysis, vessel ruputre, or mislocalised needle.

Clinical Trial

Our prospective, randomized, crossover study involving 90 healthy volunteers demonstrates that BE achieved comparable or superior sample quality while significantly reducing the volume of blood drawn per session.

Design for Manufacture

Complete

Bloody Easy devices have been designed for rapid, low cost injection-moulding manufacturing.

We have valdiated the design by vacuum-casting (~$12/pc), sterylising, and packaging over a hundred devices for the purpose of the trial.

The casts have met our quality expectations with minimal rejection rate.
